Frequently asked questions

How far is Abu Simbel from Aswan?

Roughly 280 km, and the road takes about three to four hours each way. Road day trips are therefore long, around ten hours in total, and usually start very early. Check the pickup time on the booking page.

Is it better to fly or drive to Abu Simbel?

Driving is the cheaper option and makes for a full day; a flight shortens the day a lot but costs more. Both are offered here, so compare the total time, what is included and the entrance fees.

What is there to see in Aswan itself?

Philae Temple on its island, the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, the Nubian villages and Elephantine Island with the botanical garden on Kitchener's Island. Most fit into a morning or a felucca ride.

Does Aswan have a beach?

No sea beach. Aswan is on the Nile in the far south, and the Red Sea coast is a separate, long journey. On the river you can sail by felucca or visit the Nubian villages by boat.

Where do Nile cruises from Aswan go?

Downstream to Luxor, usually past Kom Ombo and Edfu, and the offers here mostly take two to four nights. A cruise in the opposite direction starts in Luxor and is not listed on this site.

Are the Valley of the Kings and Karnak near Aswan?

No. They are in Luxor, a different city downstream. To combine both, take a Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor or plan a stay in each place.
